Cycle Worth Parking...

The 10-12 Kg Aluminium/Steel frame structure called bicycle, as we all know does not occupy a large space. The problem occurred to me when I was about to start cycling to work. Not because of any financial problem (one of my office guy asked me about it...) but as a recreational activity. I think everyone has a small grey matter in his/her head about cycling. Taking it the other way, when all of us were in our early teenage or 6-12 years of age, everyone must have asked for a bicycle from their parents for the coming birthday.

But the time when we leave our teenage, the grey matter about cycling starts to disappear. This may be because of our surroundings, neighbourhood or something else.

But considering the Cycling as eco-friendly medium of short distance transport, we can definitely save on consumption of fuels, additionally we can reduce the toxic substances exhausted in the air by burning fuels inside our car/motorcycle engines.

When I was considering starting "cycle to work" the main problem in front of me was parking. I was taking it for granted, in a way that it can be handled at the eleventh hour. But this proved to be a big mistake when I asked my office premises' security personnel about parking my bicycle inside the premises. There were several excuses they mentioned not to allow bicycles. One of those was the fact that if one bicycle is allowed, any other person will bring in the bicycle making the place crowded and messy. I thought bringing my office HR into picture might help, but that, in converse, delayed the matter further. The problem with HR was (s)he was not able to get in touch with the manager of security. Then finally the message came to me through my HR that on one fine day I should show them my bicycle. I am not able to understand what the reason behind it was. But I figured it out, may be they wanted to see if the bicycle was worth allowing to be parked?

Be it anything, I was planning a ride to Shivaji Park on the following Saturday, so I thought of extending the ride to my office. Considering this would help me measure the time required to commute daily when I start C2W. So on Saturday morning I started for the ride to my office. There I could not find the person with whom I had talked earlier. But even then I told him about the scenario of my problem. He was in sync with the other person (with whom I talked), so it was not a problem.

For the moment I thought security people would come to a conclusion with my bicycle allowed to park inside the office premises. But this was not the end of the problem. No. They told me that they will discuss with their management on the matter.

Finally on Tuesday the 27th July, 2010 I was given the permission to park my bicycle inside the premises.

This whole write up lacks one thing, which none of us might consider is vitamin M. Those guys charge 1000 bucks for a two wheeler with office premises. Probably this might be the reason there are fewer bikes within the premises compared to roadside pay and park. But they agreed on a 500 bucks monthly for a bicycle. I hope I can manage to reduce the amount in near future.
